What does being a  FAIRTRADE Borough mean for Gosport?

        GOALS

1

The Borough Council passed a resolution to  support Fairtrade and it serves Fairtrade products, such as coffee and tea, at its meetings and in its offices   The resolution was passed on 4th October 2006.

click on the Gosport logo for details

2

A range of Fairtrade products are sold in about 30 shops (target was 16)  and in 10 cafés and catering establishments.(target was 8)  We have exceeded the targets [but we'd really like more cafes, pubs and restaurants tojoin in].

  3

A number of local work places and community organisations use Fairtrade products.  [Most Churches do and a few schools, voluntary organisations and businesses but would be good to have lots more]

4

Fairtrade activities attract media coverage and popular support [plenty but always room for more]

5

Ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade borough status. [we have a great team but would welcome more people particularly from Lee-on-the-Solent and Rowner/ Bridgemary]

 Schools

Schools   - There's a great new website for you

            http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/schools/

for ideas, resources and information on how to become a Fairtrade School

Resources include a detailed action guide. poster and fliers and a powerpoint presentation.

          GFA can help you too:

GFA can provide speakers, PowerPoint presentations for different age groups and someone to talk to about how to become a Fairtrade school

GFA has a travelling exhibition about Fairtrade:

it contains posters: (which can also be used in A4 format as work sheets)

                 - what Fairtrade is;

                 - the benefits - with case studies of:

                                                 bananas from the Windward Islands,

                                                 fruit juice from Cuba

                                                 sugar from Costa Rica

                                                 tea from Sri Lanka;

                                                 women and coffee in Nicaragua

                - What it means for Gosport to be a Fairtrade Borough.

There is a quiz based on the information in the exhibition.

If you would like to borrow it, please contact us

If you would like a GFA  speaker, please contact us

St John's Primary School did a Fairtrade Project from September to October,07. They borrowed the

GFA exhibition and had a GFA speaker. The pupils work was outstanding from T shirts decorated with

a Fairtrade theme to persuasive letters explaining the benefits of Fairtrade to the School Staff. Their

campaign worked; the staff voted overwhelmingly to become a Fairtrade Staff Room. Well done, all of you.

Youth

The July 8th,2006, Alive and Kicking event in Walpole Park provided an opportunity to have a stall

A Public Meeting was held on 9th Nov 2006 in the Council Chamber of Gosport Town Hall to explain:

   why Fairtrade is needed

   how it helps reduce poverty

how Gosport can help by becoming a Fairtrade Borough.

The Council Chamber was full with over sixty people.  They heard from three excellent speakers :

Caroline Lucas, MEP, about the need for trade justice for developing country producers and how Fairtrade provides a model of trade relations which are fair for producers and consumers.

Simeon Greene of Windward Bananas showed how Fairtrade had saved the banana industry in the Windward Islands and how producers and their communities now thrive and develop.

Bruce Crowther, Fairtrade Foundation, explained what the fairtrade Mark guarantees and what was involved in becoming a Fairtrade town
The Mayor, Councillor June Cully, chaired the meeting and reaffirmed the commitment of the Council and Gosport Fairtrade Action to help Gosport achieve Fairtrade status for the Borough.

Tree planting in Falkland Gardens

The Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Keith Gill, joined members of GFA to plant a tree to commemorate the award of Fairtrade Borough Status to Gosport in 2008.

The growing tree symbolises both the continuing growth of Fairtrade in Gosport and the way in which Fairtrade enables Fairtrade producers and their families and communities to grow healthily and sustainably as Fairtrade pays them prices that cover their cost and encourage more organic production methods.
