How to become a Fairtrade Place of Worship

To become a Fairtrade Place of Worship, your mosque, temple, gurdwara or other place of worship needs to meet three goals which are about pledging to use and promote Fairtrade products.

 

The three goals

  1. Serve Fairtrade tea and coffee for all meetings and events (for which you have responsibility)
  2. Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits and fruit
  3. Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year through events, worship and other activities whenever possible

 

Many local churches are now encouraging support for Fairtrade products and we’d really like to see a wider range of places of worship get on board.  Some of the churches in the City and other local congregations have made a declaration of intent to be Fairtrade churches.

Whether your place of worship is already officially Fairtrade Certified, or not, we would like to enlist your help in campaigning.

We’re always trying to increase the number of cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels that make fairly traded products available. If faith members approached the managers at places where they are regular customers, and asked them to stock fairly traded tea, coffee etc, this would give some evidence of consumer interest and demand. There are leaflets and cards available that can be left by customers. We have already been contacting local businesses with the background information about how to obtain Fairtrade goods from catering suppliers, and have people ready to advise.

We also aim to provide speakers and Fairtrade stalls where this is helpful, to go on raising awareness more generally. There are also church information packs, packs for synagogues, mosques and places of worship for other faiths downloadable from the Fairtrade Foundation.
